Awards and Grants

TravelWise Schools Award

The purpose of the award is to reward those schools who have developed a School Travel Plan and to encourage them to maintain them and implement the actions contained in them over a sustained period.Devon Travelwise logo

There are 4 levels of the award:

  • Bronze - awarded to schools who develop, print and publicise their School Travel Plan
  • Silver - awarded to schools who monitor and evaluate the effects of their School Travel Plan one year after its development
  • Gold - awarded to schools who continue to monitor and evaluate the implementation of their School Travel Plan into a second year and who demonstrate modal shift away from the car in line with the targets set
  • Platinum - awarded to schools who continue to monitor and evaluate their travel plan, show sustained modal shift and actively participate in relevant sustainable travel campaigns (e.g. Walk to School Week)

Incentives for schools include:

  • Bronze - a framed certificate, a logo that can be used by the school on its publications and a digital camera
  • Silver - a framed certificate, a logo that can be used by the school on its publications and £100 of book vouchers
  • Gold - a framed certificate, a logo that can be used by the school on its publications and £120 of sports equipment vouchers
  • Platinum - a framed certificate, a logo that can be used by the school on its publications and £100 of garden vouchers

Numbers of Participants

By the 2005 awards, 162 schools had been awarded the Bronze Award, 38 schools had been awarded the Silver Award, 16 schools had been awarded the Gold Award and 6 schools had been awarded the Platinum award

Presentation of the Awards

Each year there is a Devon TravelWise Schools celebration event to which schools are invited to contribute, perform, display their work and be presented with their award. This is usually held in July and is often hosted by one of the award winning schools.

Criteria for Bronze Award:
To qualify for the Bronze Award, schools must achieve the following during the development of their School Travel Plan

  • Form a working group including pupils and adults
  • Carry out surveys and consultation
  • Raise awareness about the issues of safety, health and the environment related to travel to school
  • Involve the wider community
  • Set achievable targets to reduce use of the car
  • Link transport and travel to the school curriculum
  • Develop a school policy on safer, healthier and more environmentally friendly journeys to school
  • Link the School Travel Plan to the School Improvement Plan

Criteria for Silver Award

  • Portfolio of evidence about a) curriculum work related to school travel and the issues of health, safety and the environment b) evidence of awareness raising and achievements related to school travel and the issues of health, safety and the environment
  • Surveys carried out at the start of the School Travel Plan are repeated one year later
  • Results are publicised and new targets set if necessary
  • School Travel Plan is revised to ensure that implementation of actions continues

Criteria for Gold Award

  • Surveys carried out at the start of the School Travel Plan are repeated two years later
  • Results are publicised and new targets set if necessary
  • School Travel Plan is revised to ensure that implementation of actions continues
  • To demonstrate modal shift away from use of the car.

Criteria for Platinum Award

  • Portfolio of evidence about a) curriculum work related to school travel and the issues of health, safety and the environment b) evidence of awareness raising and achievements related to school travel and the issues of health, safety and the environment
  • Surveys carried out at the start of the School Travel Plan are repeated two years later
  • Results are publicised and new targets set if necessary
  • School Travel Plan is revised to ensure that implementation of actions continues
  • To demonstrate sustained modal shift away from use of the car.
  • Actively participate in relevant campaigns, such as the Great School Travel Tally and Walk to School Week
