Developing Travel Plans

CDT Bike in Traffic

We have employed a full time project officer for the Cycle Exeter project. Their job is to work with schools and businesses in the city to help them promote cycling and other sustainable modes..

They can help look at how people travel, either for their commute to work or the journey to school, and work out how we can all make small changes to benefit our health, the local environment and the traffic in our city.

How can Travel Planning help?

  • By keeping you fit! Walking and cycling where possible are quick, easy and healthy modes of travel.
  • By reducing congestion - we would like to make Exeter a more pleasant place to live and work by reducing the number of cars on the road. We can do this by encouraging walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.
  • By saving you money. On average, parents spend £300 a year on the school run. Driving to work costs you money for fuel, upkeep of the car and sometimes parking fees too. Businesses can save huge amounts of money by reducing the number of car trips their staff make for meetings.
  • By reducing pollution - A reduction of just 10% of car journeys in Devon would save 520 tonnes of air pollutants.
  • By getting help where you need it. We can help to get you better access to travel information. We have lots of resources to support you - including cycle maps of the city, posters to encourage walking and cycling, road safety guides and public transport information. We can also offer cycle training or run a Travel Awareness Day. And because we are the highways authority, we work very closely with the engineers that are responsible for our roads. Information gathered from your Travel Plan will be passed on to the highways team and can help to improve the city's road network.
  • By improving facilities for your school or workplace. Travel Planning can identify where additional or improved facilities are required. You may need showers at your workplace, or cycle storage, or perhaps simply more information for staff on what their travel options are. Schools in Exeter have already benefited from over £125,000 in Government grants to support their School Travel Plans. This means many schools have been able to pay for new cycle storage, separate entrance ways for walkers or cyclists or sheltered waiting areas. The Cycle Exeter project has funding available to support schools and businesses with Travel Plans, so get in touch to see how we can help you!

Over two-thirds of the schools in the city already have Travel Plans, with staff and pupils working hard to actively encourage green and healthy ways to travel. Many businesses in the city are also working hard to promote sustainable transport. EDF Energy and the Met Office have received national awards for their Travel Plans, which have been highly effective in reducing the use of the car. This benefits both the staff and the company, and helps to reduce congestion and pollution in the city.

Get involved today and help us make Exeter a better place to live and work!
