Cycle Exeter

Travel Plans, Information and Promotion

Graffiti Wall

Its very important to us what people think! This Graffiti Wall allowed children to give us their views on cycling.

Building new routes is only half of the story, as without making people aware of them and helping them plan their journeys, they won't be used.

So how are we helping to get more people on their bikes?

We are:

  • Developing School and Workplace Travel Plans
  • Advising on cycle routes and network planning
  • Holding promotional events around the city
  • Involving the Press
  • Developing new resources
  • Carrying out behavioural research, through surveys and feedback.
  • Monitoring use

So far in Exeter we have;

  • appointed a new full time member of staff to work with schools and workplaces to promote cycling
  • appointed a new full time member of staff for Child and Adult Cycle Training
  • carried out market research on travel behaviour;
  • appointed a full time Sustrans Bike-it Officer to work with schoolchildren to increase cycling;
  • developed a cycle training programme with the Primary Care Trust; this is called 'Cycle To Your Heart's Content'. The first training event started in March and the third course is now running (more details are available from cycleexeter@devon.gov.uk)
  • carried out promotional events for cycling during Bike Week 17th-25th June 2006, through competitions and with schools
  • begun work on producing a new cycle map for Exeter and a branded route network.
