NICE

National Institute for Clinical Excellence

part of the NHS. It produces guidance for both the NHS and patients on the use of medicines, medical equipment, clinical and surgical procedures (eg treating and managing schizophrenia; using ECT), and under what circumstances they should be used. NICE spends several months looking at how well the medicine, equipment or procedure works, before producing its report. Each guidance produced includes a 'patient leaflet' section.

National Service Framework

Published by the Dept of Health in 1999, there are NSFs for different areas of health care eg. Older People, Mental Health, Children and Diabetes. It sets out standards for improving care and gives guidelines for what good services should deliver. It sets out a 10 year strategy for improving services.
