Objective 2: Healthy

For children in need and looked-after children aged 0-18 years,
(looked-after young people with a disability or in higher education - 21 years)

The results that we would expect: that these children’s health protection and treatment needs will be identified and met as rapidly and affectively as possible.


Outcomes that would be seen and experienced:

  • Children, parents or carers would feel that emotional, psychological or physical health needs the child has are identified and responded to quickly and affectively.
  • Parents or carers would feel able to access good quality information and advice about protecting and improving the health and lifestyle of children in their care.
  • Agencies would work closely together and with parents to make sure children with disabilities receive adequate treatment and support.
  • Children and young people would feel helped and encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle.
  • Children and young people would find it easy to access information, advice and help about their physical, sexual and emotional health that is appropriate to and respectful of their age, ethnicity, culture, gender or other personal needs.

1. Fieldwork Teams

  • Health & dental checks to be carried out and recorded in line with guidance

  • Schools: special school staff and youth services and groups, other voluntary activity groups.
  • Health: GPs, school nurses, health visitors, paediatric services, specialist (LD, PD, SD, MH, D&A) health service providers, OTs, CAMHS.
  • Teenage pregnancy, sexual health and substance misuse services.
  • Family and children’s centres, play and toddler groups.
  • Advice & information services, libraries.
  • District councils: leisure centres, parks, playing fields, housing / aids/adaptations.

What research tells us about what can help us achieve these changes:

  • Brief advice & information (e.g. about smoking, drinking, diet) - especially if interestingly but regularly reinforced & made age appropriate.
  • Practical support & encouragement to take up activities - e.g. mentors, foster carers, care managers, interested adults.
  • Having good quality advice and information about illness, disability, sexuality, emotional and physical health services easily available for children, parents, carers & all staff working with children & young people.
  • Access to age, gender and culturally sensitive advice and services.
  • Timely access to needs-led; family support, treatments, therapies, adaptations and equipment.
  • Integrated assessment and access points to services.
