Family Learning

Family Learning Header

Family Learning is the name for a range of free courses for mums and dads – including grandparents and carers - of children from 0-16 years of age.

The courses give you:

  • the chance to find out how your children learn
  • the opportunity to work alongside your children
  • the opportunity to improve your own skills

The courses are free, fun and practical!

Some of our courses focus on school-age children giving you the chance to find out what your children do in school and how lessons are taught nowadays; others will explore the development of babies and toddlers.

Some courses focus on literacy and numeracy, others are craft based and / or led by discussions and activities around a topic and involve making games, books, puppets and other practical activities.

The courses are mostly run in primary and secondary schools, although we also work in Children’s Centres, community settings, libraries and various other venues. They vary from short 2 hour workshops to longer 30 hour courses spread over a whole or half a term. At the end all adults and children taking part receive a certificate for completing the course; some will also achieve the National Test in Literacy or Numeracy which can be available if you want.

The courses are grouped into 3 steps:

1. Step in to

These courses focus on learning how children learn and the value a family can add by supporting that learning.

2. Step up to

These courses offer you the opportunity to develop your own skills and improve your ability to help the children in your family.

3. Step ahead

These courses demonstrate clearly how effective family engagement with a child's education can make a significant impact. You also have the opportunity to work towards a national test in either literacy or numeracy.

You do not have to progress through all these steps, or have to complete one before starting another.

Some of the courses we offer include:

● Keeping Up with the Children – in Literacy or Numeracy
● Play and Language
● Looking at Play
● Helping with Homework
● Being the Parent of a … Toddler, Primary School Age Child or Teenager
● Making Learning Resources
● Starting School – Primary or Secondary
