There are many free web sites that offer text translation from English into most of the major languages, and other languages into English. One can copy and paste text into an almost instant translator. The standard of translation is often basic but usually enough to understand the meaning.
Many sites can also translate a foreign language web page if the web page address (the URL) is entered.
The links offered (see below Also on devon.gov.uk) to the two text and web translation sites carry no endorsement from us, they are offered only for your ease of use. Other web sites offering translation services can be found by using any of the search engines.

BSL is now an officially recognised language and the fourth most used in the UK. Whilst our social workers with Deaf people are skilled in using BSL, they do this for purposes of communicating in their social work, and cannot be available for general interpreting. A list of British Sign Language Interpreters is shown elsewhere on the county council website.
For employers, trade organisations and service providers, (and see below Also on devon.gov.uk)
(526KB - pdf help)This is a confidential translation and interpretation service our staff can access. If a member of the public cannot easily communicate in English, a member of staff will be able to use the relevant Language Line service.
Symbols are used to help children and people with learning difficulties. Their use ranges from helping children who have difficulties learning to spell, through to children and adults who are not able to use traditional text as a means of reading and self-expression. We will try to develop more use of total communication symbols in the Social Care web pages. Meanwhile, we have a growing collection of symbols and information - see Related Links above.
Our responsibility to ensure information is available in a range of formats, and accessible to people with a physical or learning disability, and those whose first language is not English.
