Sound Base

What is Sound Base?

It's an advice and information centre in Exeter aiming to improve life for people with hearing difficulties. (location and opening times below)

Sound Base is a voluntary organisation that is co-funded by Health and Social Services. It offers the opportunity for any individual experiencing any degree of hearing loss and/or their family to discuss difficulties they may be experiencing in relation to that loss.

Aims:

  • the opportunity to ask questions about hearing loss, the equipment available and any other relevant issues
  • provide independent and impartial information on a wide range of quality environmental equipment for use by people with a hearing loss
  • provide technical advice where possible, if there are difficulties with equipment
  • provide up-to-date information about relevant organisations, support groups and classes, etc
  • provide information for professionals in contact with deaf or hard-of-hearing people regarding how best to meet their needs
  • The opportunity to see and try out on display to enable people to make informed decisions about purchasing
  • training on how to use the equipment effectively and with confidence
  • raise public awareness of the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing people

Sound Base is manned by a combination of volunteer staff and professional advisors who will be happy to assist in any way they are able. Access to the centre can be either on an informal Drop-in basis, or via appointment. Wheelchair access is also available.

Opening times:

as from 1 Oct 03 -

  • Wednesday:
    Walk-in Session - Open at 10:00am and Close at 1:00pm - no appointment necessary
  • Friday:
    Walk-in Session - Open at 10:00am and Close at 1:00pm - no appointment necessary

Please note that Appointments can be arranged for other times during the week, but this would depend on the availability of staff
