Update - County Strategic Group Meeting (January 2010) postponed
What's in it for Providers? Most social care services such as care homes and home care agencies are delivered by independent providers. Devon County Council is committed to working with these providers to help manage the social care market, whether or not we contract with them.
In order to do this effectively, in response to the views expressed by providers, we have set up the Provider Engagement Network where Adult & Community Services regularly meet independent sector partners to discuss relevant issues, such as contracting arrangements and demographic trends. Quarterly forums are jointly led by an Assistant Director from Devon County Council and an elected provider representative. Relevant officers from the local authority and all Social Care Providers, private, voluntary and independent are welcome to attend the forums.

Four Learning Disability Provider Forums were held on the 30th of July and the 4th of August 2009.
In common with other aspects of public services, the Devon Learning Disability Services face some challenges that require urgent attention. The Learning Disability Management Team organised the events in order to communicate the situation to Learning Disability providers and work together to come up with sustainable solutions that offer the best way forward for commissioners, providers, people with learning disabilities and families in Devon.
The forums had a presentation from Carolyn Elliott
(275KB - pdf help) on the key finance messages and then worked in groups to look at possible solutions.
The forums also had presentations about the Learning Disability Recovery Plan
(40KB - pdf help) and Smarter Contracting
(142KB - pdf help).
Throughout both days, providers had opportunities to pose questions.
The responses and action plan from the days will be posted on the website in the near future.
Please also look out for further one-off Learning Disability Provider Forums over the coming months which will be looking at learning disability specific topics but will be tied into the generic provider forums.

Issue 10 of the National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC). This briefing focuses on the care-providing establishments and the care workforce who work with adults (aged 18 to 64), particularly adults with learning disabilities.
The NMDS-SC shows that the workforce working with adults with learning disabilities has a different profile to much of the workforce on whom data is held in the NMDS-SC overall. For example, this workforce has more men, better pay and is more likely to hold relevant qualifications.
