Safeguarding Adults: Foundation Training

Training in Safeguarding Adults is available for those who work with vulnerable adults.  The training extends from induction level to training designed for those who have a specific role within the process.

Safeguarding Adults Courses are designed to meet occupational competencies in health and social care.

Safeguarding Training is supported by statutory agencies through the Devon Safeguarding Board Training Sub Group.

There is no charge for this training for those working in the Private, Voluntary and Independent sectors

E-learning induction (Induction Level Training)

E-learning provides free user-friendly programmes which enable staff to work at their own pace at a time and place that suits the individual and the organisation.  They are available in the following subjects

  • Safeguarding Adults
  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

Who is the training for?

The training is available free to anyone in the private, voluntary, statutory and independent sectors who has any contact with vulnerable adults.

How to access e-learning   In order to access courses you will need to register an interest with the DCC Workforce Development Admin Team by emailing them at hrtahelp@devon.gov.uk or phoning on 01392 383461.  You will then be given the web-link and allocated a username and password.  

If you work for a statutory agency or private company please contact your Workforce Development officer or your Team Manager who should be able to let you know the log-on details for your organisation.

When you have successfully completed the e-learning course you will be able to print out a certificate which should be handed to your Workforce Development officer or Manager for your learning portfolio.  If you have difficulty accessing the internet we have a limited number of CD ROMs that we can provide and we are also currently developing workbooks for those who have no access to e-learning.

Level 1 Safeguarding Adults Foundation Training

The training builds on the Safeguarding Awareness, MCA and DOLS Training accessed through e-learning and aims to:

  • Develop the competencies required by staff who work with vulnerable adults
  • Provide the knowledge and skills required to recognize, respond to and report abuse
  • Develop awareness of the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and how to use them in practice

It is provided as a 1 day course and will enable staff to feedback on practice experience and learn from their colleagues.

Who is the training for?

The training is open to all staff in the private, voluntary, statutory and independent sectors who have direct contact with service users. It is not appropriate for ancillary staff.

Those attending must have completed the Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards e-learning.

Level 2 Skills for Safeguarding

The training builds on the Level 1 Safeguarding Foundation Training and aims to;

  • Develop the competencies required by staff who manage adult abuse cases
  • Provide the knowledge and skills required to carry out reviews and adult abuse investigations
  • Provide guidance in producing reports to Safeguarding meetings

It will be provided over 2 days with a follow up half day after a 6/8 week enable staff to feedback on practice experience.

Who is the training for?

The training is open to qualified staff working with statutory agencies and Registered Managers in the private, voluntary and independent sectors

Level 3 Responsible Managers Training

The training builds on the Level 2 Skills for Safeguarding Training and aims to;

  • Develop the competencies required by managers who chair and manage adult abuse cases

Who is the training for?

The training is open to managers in statutory sector who have a responsibility to chair and manage Safeguarding Adult investigations

It will be provided over 2 days

Train the Trainer (Level 1 Foundation Training)

These sessions are designed to provide trainers and managers in the statutory, private, Independent and voluntary sector with the materials and knowledge to enable them to deliver the Level 1 Safeguarding Adults Foundation Training within their own work setting

It is provided as a 2 day course with annual update days to enable staff to updated with new information and materials.

Who is the training for?

The training is open to trainers and managers and managers in the private, voluntary and independent sectors who have a responsibility to train staff within their organisation

Those attending must have completed the Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards e-learning and the Level 1 Foundation Training

Putting the Mental Capacity Act into Practice (Workshops)

The Mental Capacity Act has placed new responsibilities on staff working in health and social care.

These 2 hour workshops are for qualified and unqualified staff who work in hospital settings.

You must already have attended introductory MCA training and/or completed the MCA e-learning prior to attending these workshops.

The workshop will cover:

  • The principles of the MCA
  • The process of assessing capacity and best interests
  • How to record decisions
  • How to determine a decision maker
  • When and how to refer to the IMCA service
  • How to put a decision into action
  • What to do if someone is not complying
  • Resolving disputes
  • How to obtain further advice.

Safeguarding Adults Minute Taking Training

The training aims to provide a basic understanding of:

  • The role of the Safeguarding Meeting
  • The role of the Chair
  • The role of other agencies
  • The role as the minute taker

And guidance on:

  • Organising and preparing for safeguarding adult meetings
  • Recording and producing accurate, clear and concise safeguarding minutes
  • Content and structure of safeguarding minutes
  • Drafting, distribution and storage of minutes

The training will be provided over one 4 hour session, with follow up support to enable staff to feedback on practice experience and receive further guidance.

Who is the training for?

The training is open to Adult & Community Services staff of which taking minutes at Safeguarding Adults Meetings is part of their role.  For training in general minute taking please see the webpage;
