“If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got!”
Developing individualised / personalised services is a key theme of current public policy. The White Paper, ‘Our Health, Our Care, Our Say’ makes personalised care a priority and promotes that people should have high expectations of care and support services.
We need to work smartly, creatively and differently – rethink traditional commissioning which concentrates on inputs and outputs. Service users may just have been ‘matched’ to existing local providers rather than services being encouraged to develop or adapt to meet people’s individual needs.
Personal Brokerage will have a number of positive outcomes for service users, providers and commissioners. It should encourage providers to develop services that respond to service users’ needs and should give service users a wider choice of available services.
This process is a major cultural shift for everyone and lets people who use services set their own agenda, contribute to decision making and challenge the status quo.
