Carers in Devon

Caring for Someone?

A carer is someone who looks after a friend, relative or neighbour needing support owing to sickness, age or disability.

Throughout the carers' section, the word 'carer' does not mean a professional care-worker, for example, in a nursing home - or someone employed by a disabled person.

This section is for people new to caring and contains some ideas about where to get help and advice.

Social Services

We may be able to make things easier for you and the person you care for.  We may offer help such as a place at a day centre, support at home, adaptations or short-term breaks for you as a carer.

To work out what services could benefit you, Social Services needs to discuss the help that the person you care for needs, the help you currently give and the services your council may be able to provide. This is called an assessment. Carers can ask for their own assessment separately or have their views and circumstances considered with the assessment of the cared-for person.

Young Carers

Carers aged 16 or over who provide a regular and substantial amount of care for someone aged 18 or over have a right to an assessment.  You can have a carer's assessment even if the person you care for refuses help.

Caring for a child

If you care for a child with a disability, your needs will be considered in the family's needs assessment.

Carers workers and support groups

There are carers' support groups in many parts of the County.  The role of Carers' workers is to co-ordinate groups, give information and support carers. Some also manage the Carers Link, which you can join in order to receive newsletters, helpful information and gives you the opportunity of taking part in consultations and events.
