Maternity Allowance
This is an income replacement benefit for women who are about to, or have recently had, a baby and who cannot get Statutory Maternity Pay (e.g. because they are not employed).Maternity Allowance is paid for a period of 18 weeks. It can be claimed up to 11weeks before the week in which the baby is due. The latest that it can be claimed and still be paid for the full 18 weeks is the beginning of the week after the week in which the baby is born.
Maternity Allowance cannot be paid at the same time and to the same person as any other income replacement benefit.
Statutory Maternity Pay
This is an income replacement benefit for women who are about to, or who have recently had, a baby and who are employed. Statutory Maternity Pay is paid for a period of up to 18 weeks. It can be claimed up to 11 weeks before the week in which the baby is due. The latest it can be claimed and still be paid for the full 18 weeks is the beginning of the week after the week in which the baby is born. To get Statutory Maternity Pay the client must have been working for the same employer for 26 weeks and normally earn enough to pay national insurance contributions. Statutory Maternity Pay is usually paid by the employer.
Statutory Maternity Pay cannot be paid at the same time and to the same person as any other income replacement benefit.
Statutory Paternity Pay
This is an income replacement benefit for people who have been employed for at least 26 weeks and who have, or expect to have, responsibility for the upbringing of a child. The claimant must be the biological father of the child or be married to, or be the partner (including same sex partner) of the child’s other parent (including where the child is adopted). Statutory Paternity Pay is paid for up to two weeks paternity leave. It is usually paid from the day the baby is born or adopted, or the day after, if the claimant is working on that day or from any other date specified by the claimant within the 8 weeks after the birth. To get Statutory Paternity Pay the client must have been working for the same employer for 26 weeks and normally earn enough to pay national insurance contributions. Statutory Paternity Pay is usually paid by the employer.
Statutory Paternity Pay cannot be paid at the same time and to the same person as any other income replacement benefit.
Statutory Adoption Pay
This is an income replacement benefit for people who have been employed for at least 26 weeks and who have been matched with a child for adoption. Statutory Adoption Pay is paid for up to 26 weeks. It is usually paid from the day the baby is born or adopted, or the day after, if the claimant is working on that day or from any other date specified by the claimant within the 2 weeks after the adoption. To get Statutory Adoption Pay the client must have been working for the same employer for 26 weeks and normally earn enough to pay national insurance contributions. Statutory Adoption Pay is usually paid by the employer.
Statutory Adoption Pay cannot be paid at the same time and to the same person as any other income replacement benefit. Nor can it be paid to both members of a couple. Where one member of the couple is entitled to Statutory Adoption Pay, the other may be able to claim Statutory Paternity Pay.
Sure Start Maternity Grant
This is a lump sum award paid through the Social Fund, to people who are about to have or have recently had a baby, and who are entitled to at least one of the qualifying benefits listed under The Social Fund
