Independent Living Centre

Independent Living Centre Training

The Independent Living Centre is now responsible for providing training for all Health & Social Services staff in the Exeter, East Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, North, West and Mid Devon areas.

The Courses cover all aspects of equipment provision, fitting and relevant safety issues, and are described in detail below. The courses are planned according to the training needs identified by Health & Social Services Managers.

1.  Introduction to Equipment for Independence: Course aimed at: Referral & Information Co-ordinators, Care Direct, CES Admin staff, Social Workers, Course Duration:
1 half Day

2.  Fitting & Adjusting of Equipment:

Course aimed at: CES drivers Course Duration:
4 x 2 hour sessions-

3.  Assessment for & Fitting of Equipment:

FACS training / knowledge would be helpful before attending this course

Course aimed at: Occupational Therapists, Community Care Workers, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapist / Physiotherapy Technicians, Review Team, Rapid Response Team, Nurses, Physiotherapists

Course Duration:
1x 5 and a half hour session 9.00am - 2.30pm AND 1x 4 and a half hour session 9am-1.30pm

Both days must be attended

Course Dates: are specified on the booking form. Please print out and complete to reserve your place. Future dates will also be advertised in the ILC Newsletter. If you are not receiving the Newsletter please contact the Independent Living Centre to be added to the mailing list.

Travel / Parking: Details will be sent out with confirmation of booking. Parking is readily available.

Course Numbers: As these are practical courses, numbers on pre-booked courses are limited to a maximum of 15 per session.

Notes

1.   Introduction to Equipment for Independence:

Staff completing this course will have:

  1. ·A knowledge of the type of needs the equipment may meet.
  2. ·Increased awareness of other ways of meeting client’s needs (e.g. rehab).
  3. ·An awareness of environmental factors/limitations or risks.
  4. ·Awareness of the standard range of equipment that could meet client need.
  5. ·The ability to make a judgement about whether equipment meets the identified need.
  6. ·The confidence to seek a second opinion where necessary.

Course aimed at: RICS, Care Direct, Admin staff, CES Admin, SWs.

Course Duration: 1 half day

Booking essential.

2.   Fitting & Adjusting of Equipment:

Staff completing this course will have:

  • ·Increased awareness of equipment available.
  • ·An awareness of environmental factors/limitations or risks.
  • ·The ability to fit and adjust equipment safely within the ILC environment.
  • ·A knowledge of safe equipment use.
  • ·The confidence to seek a second opinion where necessary.

Course aimed at: CES drivers

Course Duration: 4 x 2 hour sessions

  • -Bathing & Toilet Equipment
  • -Raising Equipment
  • -Household & Mobility Equipment
  • -Beds & Pressure Mattresses

3.   Assessment For & Fitting of Equipment:

Staff completing this course will have:

  • ·Up to date knowledge of the range of equipment that could meet client need.
  • ·Knowledge of the type of needs the equipment may meet.
  • ·Awareness of other ways of meeting client’s needs (e.g. rehab).
  • ·Awareness of environmental factors/limitations or risks.
  • ·Ability to make a judgement about whether equipment meets the identified need.
  • ·Understanding about when a specialist assessment is needed and how to access this.
  • ·Increased understanding of the process of ordering equipment.
  • ·Ability to fit and adjust equipment safely within the ILC environment.
  • ·Confidence to seek a second opinion where necessary.
  • ·Knowledge of safe equipment use.

Course aimed at: OTs, CCWs, OT Assistants, OT/PT Technicians, Review Team, Rapid Response Team, Nurses, Physiotherapists

FACS training/knowledge would be helpful before attending this course.

Course Duration: 2 day session: 1x 5 and a half hours and 1x 4 and a half hour session.  Delegates must attend on both days.
