DAPH Autumn Briefing Event
On 16th November 2011, over 150 headteachers and other school representatives attended the DAPH Autumn 2011 Briefing event at The Tiverton Hotel.
The morning Panel session provided attendees with a helpful and informative opportunity to hear first hand from senior officers and members of Devon County Council about recent organisational changes within the Local Authority, the new "single authority" approach to services and how schools fit into this transformed landscape.
During the afternoon, Kevin Jane HMI for Ofsted presented on the forthcoming changes to the Inspection Framework for Maintained Schools and Academies from January 2012.
Feedback received from those who attended has been extremely positive and, on behalf of the DAPH Executive and membership, we would like to thank the panel members and our guest presenter for contributing towards the success of this event.

DAPH 2011 Annual School Leadership Conference

Just before half term, we were delighted to host the DAPH 2011 Annual School Leadership Conference at The Saunton Sands Hotel. With its theme of "Creativity in Learning......Innovation in Leadership" delegates were inspired by three keynote speakers and many took the opportunity to participate in a number of seminar workshops, browse two very different and re-vamped exhibition suites or take time out for some beauty treatments and/or Dedicated Headship Time in the wonderful surroundings of the hotel.
The formal dinner allowed for time for school leaders to network and catch up with colleagues whilst the Charity Pig Racing raised a commendable £441 for our nominated charity this year, NSPCC. A big thank you to those who contributed to this collection and also to NPS Group and Devon Norse Ltd who sponsored wine at dinner and pre-dinner drinks respectively.

We have already received some excellent and constructive feedback from delegates who attended the two day event and if you have yet to complete an evaluation form this will assist us greatly in the planning and arrangements for the 2012 event. Click for an electronic copy of the evaluation form which, once completed, should be returned to the DAPH Office by e-mail or post.

Dates for next year's 2012 Annual Conference have already been announced as 11th & 12th October 2012 and, based on the success of the last two years, we have once again booked The Saunton Sands Hotel. DAPH Annual General Meeting 2011
The DAPH AGM was held at Sandy Park Conference Centre on 6th July 2011 and we would like to thank those headteachers who took gave up their time to attend at a particularly busy period leading up to the end of term within schools.
Minutes of the meeting will follow in due course but in summary the meeting included a round-up of the work undertaken by DAPH on behalf of Devon primary schools during the year including representation on the many statutory boards and LA working groups which has been collated within the first DAPH Annual Report 2010/11. This new report includes the Annual Financial Report as well as a list of all headteachers who have represented DAPH at some point during the year and we would also like to thank these colleagues for assisting in the work of the Association.
Paul Walker DAPH Chair outlined changes to the DAPH Executive Committee which resulted in Jan Baker being re-elected and Alun Dobson of Marwood School joining having previously worked in a commissioned role on Forum for Learning and Achievement.
In addition, Anne Ladbrook has stepped down from the Executive Committee after five years of involvement, most latterly in the role of Vice Chair. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to Anne for the hard work and commitment given to working on behalf of Devon primary headteachers. In addition to playing an active part in the work of the Executive, Anne's contribution has also included representation on Devon Education Forum and on its sub-group Forum for Learning and Achievement with responsibility for "Embedding Learning", a best practice project which will be published and released to all schools later this year. In the meantime, Anne will continue to head up arrangements for this year's Annual School Leadership Conference at Saunton Sands before retiring at the end of 2011.
Recent changes to the phase representation on Devon Education Forum and its sub-groups were also outlined at the meeting together with the requirement for proportionate representation of academies. In the absence of an umbrella association for academies it has been agreed that the names of proposed representatives should be put forward by DAPH, DASH, SHAD and DAG respectively and notified in writing to the governing bodies of schools which have already converted to academy status. In the absence of any other candidate being put forward, the proposed nomination will stand; otherwise an election will take place.
Click to view details of the revised DAPH Structure, revised Constitution adopted at last week's meeting. Draft minutes of the full AGM meeting will be available on the website at the start of next term.

Tuesday 24th May 2011
9.00am - 1.30pm
Hosted by Ashfords Solicitors
at their Exeter Offices
Do you wonder what accountability and school management will look like in a few years' time?
Whether intending to convert to academy status or staying as a maintained school, business management is presenting a new set of challenges. Furthermore, will headteachers be in control of what goes on in their schools to a greater or lesser degree than happens now?
What are the legal and financial risks associated with greater autonomy?
Open to headteachers, governors and school business managers, this free seminar is aimed at raising awareness of the issues facing schools. More information

****DAPH HR & Finance Workshops****
Wednesday 2nd March 2011 –The Tiverton Hotel, Tiverton
(12.30pm Arrival & lunch for Workshop 1.00pm – 4.00pm)
Due to popular demand and extremely positive feedback received at last week events, we have arranged for an additional workshop date in the week immediately after half term.
Timed to take place ahead of the anticipated date that schools will receive notification of budgets for 2011/12, we have also chosen a different day of the week and switched the workshop to an afternoon event in order to accommodate teaching heads or other interested headteachers who may not have been able to attend last week.
Suitable for newly appointed, acting and even experienced headteachers representatives from the Schools' Personnel and Finance teams will be on hand to advise on ensuring your school is properly prepared and aware of current policy and procedure, provide an outline of the different services and levels of support available and at which stage to seek advice.
Tracey Hart, Project Lead SLSS will facilitate the sessions and there will be plenty of time available for questions and answers.

Fair Funding Campaign Update
Thank you to all the parents, staff and governors who participated in the letter writing campaign. We have had an impact that has been commented on in Westminster. Helen Nichols has written to Tony Blair inviting him down to Devon to see our schools and we will be sending him a folder of our press cuttings so that he is absolutely clear as to the strong feelings we have about our lack of funding in Devon. Well done.
