Please note that in addition to the oneline application form, you will need to complete a supplementary form if you wish to express St Peter’s Church of England Aided School as one of your preferences. This form is available direct from the school, and should be returned to them direct by 16 October 2009.

The Governors welcome applications from all parents who wish their child to benefit from the education provided at St Peter’s Church of England Aided School. The school is founded and conducted on the assumption that the majority of parents have specifically chosen to send their child to the school because they wish them to be educated within the doctrines, practices and liturgy of the Church of England. This assumption governs the Admissions Policy.

Contributory Primary Schools

St Peter’s Church of England Aided School serves primary schools in Exeter and the surrounding area for all places.

For children attending St Nicholas Catholic Primary School there is no formal link with a secondary school. If your child attends this school the linked secondary school will be that designated to serve the home address. If you are not sure which designated area you live in you can check on www.devon.gov.uk/schoolareamaps or telephone the Education Helpline on 0845 155 1019.

Planned Admission Number

245 (Number of places available September 2010)

Type of School:

Voluntary Aided, Comprehensive, specialist Languages status

Age Range:

11–16

School Number:

4607

Eligibility Criteria:

a)  125 Foundation places - where the child and/or parents frequently worship in the Church of England. The governors do not regard attendance as a member only of a youth or uniformed organisation (such as Crusaders, Scouts and Guides) as falling in this definition. Applications must be supported by the Parish priest or minister. Applications not satisfying this criteria will be considered as Open place applications. If there are more applications than places available the Over-Subscription Criteria will be used to allocate places. (see below)
b)60 other Christian Church places – where the child and/or parents frequently worship at churches which are members of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland or Churches Together in England, or Churches Together in Central Exeter, Heavitree or Westexe, or are members of the Evangelical Alliance. Applications must be supported by the Parish priest or minister. Applications not satisfying this criteria will be considered as Open Place applications. If there are more applications than places available, the Over-Subscription Criteria will be used to allocate places (see below)
c)60 open places - where the child and/or parents do not meet the criteria for Foundation or other Christian Church places.

In the event of the Foundation places not being fully subscribed, the balance will be transferred to other Christian Church places. In the event of other Christian Church places not being fully subscribed the balance will be allocated to Foundation places. Subsequently any remaining places will be transferred to open places.

Oversubscription Criteria:

A child who has a Statement of Special Needs, where the school is named on the Statement, will take precedence for a school place (as directed in Admissions legislation). In the event of there being more applications than places in any category, the governors, in considering all applications will give priority in the following order to:

  1. Children in Care
  2. children with a sibling in attendance at St Peter’s at the time of admission
  3. children with exceptional social and/or medical reasons for attending St Peter’s with strong supporting evidence from an appropriate professional person
  4. distance from school (using the Local Authority definition), with priority given to those living nearest the school.

Notes:

i.

Applications for a place other than in the initial allocation to the intake year will be considered but granted only if there are vacancies in the appropriate year group unless there are:

a. exceptional social and/or medical reasons, with strong supporting evidence from an appropriate professional person

b. particular reasons for attendance at a church school supported by evidence from a Parish priest or minister for applicants who fulfil the eligibility criteria for Foundation or Other Christian Church places.

ii.In the case of an unsuccessful application, parents or guardians have the right of appeal against the governors’ decision, by contacting the Clerk to the Independent VA Schools Admissions Panel, County Hall, Topsham Road, EX2 4QG. In the case of an unsuccessful appeal the governors will not consider a further application for admission in the same academic year unless there are significant and material changes in the circumstances of the parent or child relevant to a further application.
iii.To ensure that the school admits the standard number (245) students and maintains the appropriate number of Foundation and Other Christian Church (OCC) places in the intake year, the governors will, after allocating all the places for that year, maintain a waiting list. The waiting list will be compiled by giving preference firstly to Foundation applicants, secondly to OCC applications and thirdly to Open Place applicants using Priority Criteria 1-4 above within each category. Any subsequent application added to this list will be inserted at the appropriate position of priority. The waiting list will be kept and used until 14 September in the first term in which the intake year are first admitted to the school.
iv.

Save in exceptional circumstances, for the purposes of Foundation Places and Other Christian Church Places, in order to meet the criteria of ‘frequently worship’ either the child or parents must:

  • Have attended Church on average at least once a month for at least one year prior to the date of the application for admission, or
  • Have attended Church at Christmas, Easter and Pentecost (Whit Sunday) for at least three years prior to the date of the application for admission, or
  • Be undertaking a course of preparation/instruction for Baptism or Confirmation.
