Admission Arrangements
Designated areas
Designated or catchment areas form part of the admission arrangements and, as such, should also be consulted upon before arrangements are set.
It is possible to view the designated area map for any school to check its accuracy as part of their admission arrangements. As part of the 2005 consultation exercise hard copy maps were sent to all Chairs of Governors and Headteachers. This highlighted several issues which should now have been resolved on the Mapscape (GIS) mapping system. These maps represent what is currently held by Devon County Council and will be used to allocate places in schools.
Changes to the designated areas of the following schools are proposed for the 2011/12 academic year. Please note that designated areas for primary schools form part of their contributory secondary schools:
- Appledore Primary School
- Berry Pomeroy Primary School
- Cornwood Church of England Primary School
- Countess Wear and The Topsham primary schools (boundary between)
- Dolton Church of England and Winkleigh primary schools (boundary between)
- Kingswear Primary School
- Marldon Church of England Primary School
- Modbury Primary School

Please follow the instructions below to access Mapscape (GIS) and view designated area maps:
It will help to know a school’s postcode when using Mapscape (GIS). These can be found by clicking on Devon Schools - Home
Go to www.devon.gov.uk/schoolareamaps This will take you into the School Designated Area Maps screen. This is the screen you use to look for a school’s designated area.
Click on the small Gaz icon, on the top left side of the screen. This is where you need to know the postcode. Enter the postcode in the box provided and click on Find.
This then gives you a scrollable list of addresses with that postcode. Click on the school’s address.
The designation area for the school will then appear on the screen, marked with a blue boundary line.
You may need to zoom out to see the complete designated area map. To do this, click on the Magnifying Glass with the – (minus sign) on it and then click on the map until you can see the whole area. To zoom in, click on the Magnifying Glass with the + on it and then click on the map until you only see the area you wish to see.
You are also able to reposition the map in order to see the complete designated area. This can be done by clicking on the Hand icon on the left hand side of the screen and then clicking and dragging on the map.
Should any queries arise from either process, they should be referred to: Policy and Strategy Officer (Education).
