Soweto Kinch to visit Devon Schools November 2006

Soweto Kinch - imageSoweto Kinch is described as the most exciting young alto sax star to hit the UK scene since Courtney Pine and Denys Baptiste.  His list of awards include Mercury Music Prize for Album of the Year (2003), Mobo Award for Best Jazz Act (2003) and the BBC Jazz Awards for Best Band and Best Instrumentalist (2004).  He is currently one of just 10 UK artists selected to participate in a major new education initiative – My Music – helping teenagers broaden their musical horizons. During National Music Week, children will be able to get Soweto's latest album free of charge.

Between Tuesday 28th November and Thursday 30th November 2006, Devon Music Service is working in conjunction with Soweto Kinch to provide six sets of workshops for 30 boys and girls aged 11-14 years, teaching basics of rapping, approach to writing, and freestyling.  There will also be a concert for nearby schools to attend at each venue.  See below for schools participating.

Teacher Inset Training

On Tuesday 28th November, Devon Music Service is also offering teachers the opportunity to join Soweto Kinch for a FREE rapping, lyric writing and freestyling inset training workshop.  This will be held at Knowles Hill School, Newton Abbot between 4pm and 5pm.  The inset training will work in tandem with a series of workshops for 11-14 year old boys and girls being held throughout Devon, where the pupils will themselves learn the basics of rapping, lyric writing and freestyling from Soweto and his band.   For further information or to book a place please phone Kipp Pratt on 07974 988837
