Projects 2009/10
Whaletone Opera
Makoto Nomura from Tokyo and Hugh Nankivell from Torquay are musicians and composers who work together on creative projects. One of their compositions, created between 2004 and 2005, is the Whaletone Opera – a piece conceived both by professional musicians and people from the local community in Sennan (Japan) and Huddersfield. Four week long sessions, two in each location, saw the completion of the story and score in four acts, and each act was then performed in the town in which it was written. A full score of the opera was then published.
Nomura and Hugh are now bringing the opera to Kingsbridge in a week long project for primary school children. They will be spending the week visiting Stokenham, Thurlestone, Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Charleton primary schools, culminating in a performance of part of the opera at Kingsbridge Community College on October 10th. On the Thursday prior to the project there will be workshop for participating teachers. Each school will undertake two workshops in which to create their musical part of the story, using both themes from the original score and their own ideas.
DMS and the schools involved are jointly funding this project, and we are very grateful to Kingsbridge Community College for making their facilities available to us for free. Unfortunately the performance can only be offered to parents of children involved due to the capacity of the theatre. It promises to be a fascinating week of creative music making.
