There are many thousands of different trusts in the UK. However not all are available to students. Different trusts have different criteria. So, firstly you have to find an appropriate trust to apply to. Secondly, follow the specified application procedure, some Trusts require the institution to apply, some may let the applicant apply in the first instance then approval is required from the institution for references. There are a number of ways for you to find a charity that may be able to help meet your particular need.

EGAS provides information on alternative sources of funding for students. They will advise individuals who are resident in either the UK or the European Economic Area and who wish to enter post 16 education or training in the UK. EGAS cannot help anyone who wishes to study outside the UK. Students should contact EGAS by telephone, e-mail or send a stamped addressed envelope and request a Student Questionnaire. 3. Local Charities

The following charities can give help to students for specific purposes, eg. books, equipment etc. They tend not to give maintenance grants but if you need only a small amount towards maintenance, it may be worthwhile asking for help.  Apply in writing, explaining how much you need, what you need the grant for, why you need help and what your financial circumstances are. If you can get letters of support (from tutors, Social Workers etc) it will help.


Funds are available to make grants to students to assist towards the payment of fees and other educational expenses and for the purchase of necessary equipment and tools relating to course. Applicants must be resident in Exeter or within a 15 mile radius and aged 25 or under and must be prepared to attend in person at an informal interview. For children and young persons under the age of 25 who are attending St Peter's Church of England High School, Exeter or who attended that School or the former Bishop Blackall School for Girls, Exeter. The Trust has an annual budget for grants and within the budget figure grants are normally available up to £300 and are awarded on a one-off basis for specific educational purposes. Devon Educational Trust considers application for grants towards the costs of education such as books, travel, equipment etc. Applicants must be under 25 years of age and be permanently resident in Devon. The Trustees meet three times a year, in March, July and November and deal with around 50 applications at each meeting. They normally make awards ranging from £100 to £500, although in special circumstances larger awards are sometime made. Applications from individuals are only considered if their place of residence is in the South West. Applications for projects and from other trusts may be considered from other areas of the country - but preference given to the South West.

Type of Grant

General charitable purposes, but in particular the encouragement of local life through education, the arts and the social sciences.


Postgraduate study, overseas student grants, expeditions and travel and study projects overseas; Counselling courses; large scale national organisations; also renewed request from the same (successful) applicant within a two-year period.

There were 81 grants in 2010/2011, totalling £40,440.

(10) VIVIAN MOON FOUNDATION (incorporating NDMA Training)

The Foundation is a registered charity which offers scholarships, sponsorships or financial support to people who have links with North Devon and wish to undertake training to gain a professional, business or vocational qualification.

The Foundation exists (where no other funding is available) to:

  1. Help train unemployed persons enabling them to get a job.
  2. Train those in work to do their job better.
  3. Raise skills/knowledge of individuals to help them gain promotion at work.

Applications are invited from, and restricted to, people who either live in North Devon or whose families do. The financial support is usually awarded to individuals who wish to remain or return to the area to undertake their chosen career.

The Foundation is a Trust administered by a Board of Governors representing local business and professional people who meet regularly to grant awards.

Assistance is available for part-time, sandwich and correspondence courses as well as full-time courses. The course you wish to undertake must offer formal qualifications at a higher level or a qualification with a recognised professional or vocational body. However, the Foundation does not normally fund First Degree courses.


  1. North Devon means the area administered by either Torridge or North Devon District Councils.
  2. The Foundation Governors meet three times a year, in January, May and September to consider applications.

Book Grants are given both to students who live in the Parish of Bideford, who have just finished secondary education, and also to students who live in the north of the Parish but to the south of the Link Road. Discretionary Bursaries are only given to students living in the Parish of Bideford.

Persons living in Bideford and its immediate neighbourhood who are similarly going onto or continuing higher education may be eligible for assistance in the event of severe financial hardship (please note that "severe" indicates something over and above the necessity of seeking a student loan). Each of these cases are considered in any event on their own merits.

In addition, any other persons generally commencing a further education course are again eligible to apply for assistance to be considered on its own merits.  Grants were awarded last year up to £150.

This scheme is to benefit students who live in the Parish of Combe Martin only. Students studying on both higher and further education courses are eligible to apply for assistance. The award may take the form of a book or instrument grant up to a maximum of £200.00.

This scheme is for the benefit of persons of either sex who have not attained the age of 25 years, are resident in the parish of Braunton, and are, in the opinion of the Governors, in need of financial assistance in one or more of the following ways:

  1. The award of Scholarships, Bursaries, or Maintenance allowances tenable at any School, University or other place of learning, approved by the Governors.
  2. The provision of financial assistance, tools, instruments or books to enable beneficiaries on leaving school, a university or any other educational establishment to prepare for, or to assist their entry into a profession, trade or calling.
  3. The award of Scholarships or Maintenance Allowances to enable beneficiaries to travel abroad to pursue their education.
  4. The provision, or assistance towards the provision of facilities of any kind not normally provided by the Local Education Authority, for recreation and social and physical training including the provision of coaching in athletics, sports and games, for beneficiaries who are receiving primary, secondary or further education.
  5. The provision of financial assistance to enable beneficiaries to study music or other arts.

Grants in aid are limited to students aged 16 to 23 years born or resident with their parents for five years, either

(i) within the boundaries of the city of Plymouth or

(ii) within the parishes of Bere Ferrers, Brixton, Sparkwell and Yealmpton.


Grants in aid are limited to students aged 16 – 23 years born, or resident with their parents for five years, within the boundaries of the County Borough of Plymouth as established since 1 April 1967

Grants by these two Foundations are made to assist in starting out in life, either at University, College of Education or other educational establishment, including professional or technical ones.  Grants are not made for maintenance while at such establishments, but are made to enable the commencement, properly equipped, of courses at such places and may include the provision of clothing, tools, equipment and books at all levels of further education.


Grants in aid are limited to GIRLS aged 16 – 23 years, resident in the counties of Devon and Cornwall:-

(i) Primarily Orphans - that is those who have lost either or both parents.

(ii) Any other Girl in need.

Grants are made towards the cost of care, maintenance or other needs, particularly in the case of those entering upon a trade, occupation or profession, by providing tools, books, special fees, travelling expenses or other items as may help them earn their own living or advance them in their chosen livelihood.


The Foundation makes awards to students who are undertaking courses in Further Education. The awards are made for a maximum period of three years and are for the general use of students to assist with fees, accommodation, purchase of books and equipment, travelling or any other expense incurred by the student.

Applicants must be aged 16 or over but under 25 at the date of application and at the beginning of the latest year for which award is applied.

Applicants must be resident in Somerset, Devon or Cornwall at the date of application, and must satisfy at least one of these requirements :-

(i) The Applicant must have been born in Somerset, Devon or Cornwall,


(ii) The Applicant must have been resident in Somerset, Devon or Cornwall for at least 3 years before the date of application,


(iii) The Applicant must have been attending a school in Somerset, Devon or Cornwall for at least 2 years before the date of application

All applications are considered on merit but preference is given to Applicants who are, or who are about to become, undergraduates of Oxford University or any other University.

An application form and information sheet can be obtained by emailing the Clerk to the Trustees on Closing date for applications for the next academic year is end of February with awards being informed in May. Those students who have already started their course may also apply for the remaining years.


Eligibility – Students resident in Devon and Cornwall on a course or programme (certificate, diploma or first degree level at a suitable UK college or university in the United Kingdom), which includes aspects of livestock breeding, husbandry and welfare may apply.

Type of Grant – A limited number of bursaries up to £1000 per annum for up to 3 years are available for suitable students. These will be awarded on merit and at the sole discretion of trustees. The board of trustees, whose decision is final, will notify applicants of their decision and the amount of any award in June/July and make payment to successful applicants in October. Awards must be claimed within 3 months of the receiving the trust’s letter advising a bursary grant has been approved

Requirements – Applications must be accompanied by two testimonials in support of the applicant's commitment. Trustees may choose to interview eligible applicants. A successful applicant is expected to provide from the college each year confirmation that he/she has taken up the course, and be prepared to meet the Trustees to report on progress. Successful applicants may reapply for a further annual grant in a subsequent year whilst pursuing the same course.

Restrictions – Awards will not be made for gap years or towards foreign travel.
