The old and the new. This little girl lives in a modern trailer on an official site. Her family keeps the old waggon, which is the same type that her grandparents lived in, for tradition's sake.
The family collects scrap metal for recycling.

Highly decorated chrome trailers were popular homes for Gypsy Traveller families during the 1970s and the 1980s. By adding strips of chrome families could customise their trailers.

The insides of chrome trailers are highly decorated and polished, with many mirrors to reflect the light. Designs etched on the mirrors, such as bunches of grapes, are often the same patterns as those which were carved in wood on the old waggons.
Many Traveller families collect cut glass and Crown Derby plates.

Showmen's trailers are homes for the whole year. In winter they will be parked in home base yards called winter quarters. In summer they will be by the side of each fairground site. The trailers have all home comforts including television and video.

At the end of the travelling season, the Showmen return to their winter quarters. Here there is space for the trailers to be parked and for equipment to be stored and repaired during the winter months.

Bender Tent
Bender Tent

Tents are one of the oldest forms of dwelling. The bender tent takes its name from the way it is made. Branches, usually from a hazel tree, are bent over and tied together to make a frame. A tarpaulin is then stretched over the frame. Some benders have windows. Wood burning stoves can be put inside.
