The Government's Specialist Schools programme provides an opportunity for secondary schools to build upon their existing strengths. Schools may apply for Specialist College status in a recognised subject area, within the terms of the programme. From 2006, schools that have consistently achieved exceptional standards, are invited to apply for the additional status of being a 'High Performing' school in the area of excellence concerned. More details of the criteria involved can be accessed via the DfES link below. High performing schools can apply for a second specialism, Learning School status and participate in Leading Edge (LE) Partnership activity or apply for Vocational status. The map for Devon gives an overview of the progress being made in the County.
Use the links below to see the schools in Devon and their status, or select a speciality from the links below to see which schools are in pursuit of that speciality and those which have already acquired Specialist College status in that subject.
The DfES also have an informative page on the subject of Specialist Schools. It covers such topics as:- "What are Specialist Schools?", "Becoming a Specialist School" and others. It can be accessed by going to DfES - The Standards Site - Specialist Schools
Please note: we are unable to discuss the details of individual applications and any queries in that regard should be directed to the school or college in question.
