Renewal of Music Copyright Licences - Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL)

Renewal of Music Copyright Licences - Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL)

In April 2008 the school PPL licence will no longer be issued directly by PPL and will become the responsibility of the collection agent CEFM.   CEFM already licence Devon schools for other activities requiring copyright clearance.  In order to provide them with accurate information to arrange the new licence, I would be grateful if you would consider the following and submit your answer no later than 20th March 2008.

The use of live music, for example, a teacher playing an instrument with children singing along requires a Performing Right Society (PRS) licence only.  Most Devon schools have a PRS licence, and those which do not have been identified by CEFM.  As soon as pre-recorded music is used then a PPL licence is also required.  Examples of pre-recorded music could be any of the following:

  • Playing a radio/CD/tape player
  • Discos or end of term parties
  • Jukebox
  • Telephone system with music on hold function
  • School fetes where music is played
  • Dance or aerobic classes

PPL records have indicated that relatively few Devon schools have a PPL licence and I need to ascertain whether this is a true reflection of music usage in our schools.  Please answer the following question.   If your school uses pre-recorded music in any of the above ways, please submit ‘yes’.  If your school does not use pre-recorded music then submit ‘no’.
