School Organisation Plan (SOP) 2004-2008

School Organisation Plan 2003/4 - 2007/8

The School Organisation Plan was one of seven Statutory Plans repealed by the Children's Act 2004. This 2004 - 2008 Plan is therefore the last one to be published under Statutory requirements. The Children's Act 2004 also requires Children Services Authorities to prepare and publish a Children and Young People's Plan (CYPP) This Plan can be accessed at http://www.devon.gov.uk/cyps-plan.pdf

The School Standards and Framework Act 1998 requires Devon County Council as the Local Education Authority (LEA) to produce a School Organisation Plan.

The Plan:

  • States County Council Policies & Principles
  • Deals with how school places are provided in Devon and how places will be provided to meet future demand.
  • Covers a five year period from the start of the academic year beginning September 2003. It is a rolling Plan that is reviewed and updated every three years to cover the following 5 years.
  • Identifies the areas where places will be needed and what type of places will be needed.
  • Gives details of provision for children with Special Educational Needs and for Post 16 students.

Identifies how all the promoters and providers of education in Devon which are the LEA, the Church of England, the Roman Catholic Church and the Learning Skills Council will be involved.

The County Council has set up a School Organisation Committee who have considered and approved the School Organisation Plan. Devon's School Organisation Committee is formed from members drawn from the County Council, the Church of England Diocesan Board of Education, the Roman Catholic Schools Commission, the Learning and Skills Council and serving school governors.
