Changing Our Futures - coverThere is increasing evidence from Ofsted and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMI) that school improvement can be enhanced significantly when children and young people are able to address real-life challenges through outdoor learning and residential experiences. These should work together with environmental education and global citizenship initiatives that promote Learning for Sustainability as an integrated part of the curriculum. Such activities promote inclusion and provide some of the most effective and memorable education. This is because of the way in which they are capable of involving all children and young people in an experiential and participatory way in their own learning. This in turn can do so much to boost confidence and develop character and self-esteem which are in turn critical in improving motivation, behaviour and achievement – all core objectives of the Children and Young People’s Services Raising Achievement Plan.

Section Four: Learning for Sustainability – Case Studies
The case studies show the ways in which a wide range of Learning for Sustainability activities contribute to the five outcomes of Every Child Matters. Each set of case studies is prefaced by a brief overview of the outcome of Every Child Matters they inform. Although each of the case studies has a particular focus it is clear that they also contribute to the other outcomes. This is in the nature of Learning for Sustainability and the interconnections between the five outcomes.
