Devon Gets Reading

Devon gets Reading - for teachers - secondary

Devon gets Reading

The official website of the campaign is www.yearofreading.org.uk and this gives you lots of fresh ideas for enjoying and developing reading.

The best site for in-depth support for promoting reading is The Reading Agency.

A great place to start if you want to know about children’s books and authors is The Reading Zone.

This site is really useful for highlighting the key to successful reading – enjoying it!. Go to www.enjoyingreading.org.uk for some terrific ideas.

If you have other information that you think would be helpful to other people using this page please send it to rmkirk@onetel.net.

Focus on White Working Class Boys - for information

As you know white working class boys (Free School Meals) are one of our target audiences for the NYR.

To inform our work we recently commissioned some research to find out what motivates them, what they are interested in and what their reading habits are. The findings are incredibly helpful for our work and will be useful for your work with this audience too.

Read a summary here.

In addition, if you are using the NYR to reach working class boys through their families then you may find it interesting that The Bookseller recently reported that book sales among this group are increasing but are particularly focussed on crime fiction and true life stories.

Many of you have also asked me about the National Strategies data which we have promised to you and which details which schools have a particularly high number of Free School Meal boys. Fiona O' Brien our Assistant Director is working with the National Strategies team and we will get this information to you as soon as possible.

Age raging - the debate around age guidance on children's books

Children’s books are back in the headlines with the current debate about the inclusion of age guidance on the back of books. Find out more here.

Boys Into Books

Boys into Books is funded by the DCSF to underpin reading for purpose and pleasure and to celebrate the National Year of Reading with extra resources for your school library.

The boxes of books will be delivered in late September, not during the summer term as originally planned. This is because our book suppliers cannot meet the deadlines for delivery, because the publishers haven’t printed sufficient copies of titles on the prescribed list!

Every Primary and Special school will receive a collection of at least 25 books, specially chosen by SLS staff to appeal to lads (but girls will enjoy them too!) You don’t have to do anything except enjoy sharing the books.

DON’T FORGET!!

Devon SLS librarians are happy to come to schools to promote reading to children and parents – check out our website for more information www.devonsls.org.uk

Free books into schools - Reception and Year 7

Some two million books are to be given away by Christmas with the extension of the Booktime programme for reception-aged pupils and the Booked Up programme for Year 7 pupils. Some £4m has been given by the DSCF to fund the free books and the programme is managed by Booktrust.

This is a terrific free scheme and well worth getting involved in.

For further details go to their revamped websites: www.booktime.org.uk and www.bookedup.org.uk

THE WRITE FANTASTIC

If you think your children would be interested in fantasy writing, then this group might be able to help. They write:

Hello,

Further to finding your details on the Year of Reading website, I’m writing to introduce The Write Fantastic. We’re a group of professional fantasy writers seeking to introduce fantasy fiction to a wider readership, and to show the broad scope of narratives available within the genre today.

We are Sarah Ash, Chaz Brenchley, Mark Chadbourn, Juliet E McKenna, Deborah J Miller, Stan Nicholls and Jessica Rydill. Our work is highly diverse in style and focus, exemplifying the range of contemporary fantasy writing.

I attach our introductory leaflet and also our Recommended Reads leaflet, a selection of old and new, classics and less well-known titles that we have put together and which has proved a great success. Please feel free to copy and use these with your branch libraries, particularly for June’s ‘escapes’ theme.

If you’re interest in working with us, don’t hesitate to get in touch,

Regards

Juliet E McKenna
