Child Entertainment Exemption Licence

Children & Young Persons Act 1963
The Children (Performance) Regulations 1968

A Child Performance Exemption Licence may be granted by the Local Authority subject to the following:

  • No payment in respect of the children taking part in the performance, other than defraying expenses, is made to the child or another person
  • No child has performed in the six months preceding the performance on more than four days
  • No child shall be absent from school as a result of any performance or rehearsal
  • No child under the age of 13 may remain at the place of performance after 10.00pm or 30 minutes after the end of their part in the performance, whichever is the earlier
  • No child over the age of 13 may remain at the place after 10.30pm or 30 minutes after the end  of their part in the performance, whichever is the earlier
  • No child should take part in a performance the duration of which exceeds 3.5 hrs
  • No child should take part in a performance if the duration of their appearance in the performance exceeds 2.5 hrs.

The following are recommendations which are considered by the local authority as desirable for anyone involved with performances with children;

  • There shall be at least one adult for every 12 children, (under the age of 16 years) whose role will be to supervise the children whilst not on stage (these persons should be Licenced Chaperones)
  • No child should share a dressing room with an adult or with a child of the opposite sex
  • Each child must be accompanied to and from the place of performance by a responsible adult, preferably his or her parent
  • No child shall be allowed to perform when unwell, and appropriate first aid facilities shall be available in case of accident or injury
