Civil Engineering

A county for everyone. A job just for you.

At Devon County Council, we understand that the development of our Civil Engineers is central to our long term ability to provide the highest possible quality of services to the people of Devon.  The projects you will enjoy are as varied as they are challenging and interesting, as part of our progressive, innovative approach, enabling you to “be all you can be”.

Our career progression scheme (currently in the Engineering Design Group) allows you to set the pace at which you develop through to senior management if you show the necessary flair, ambition and ability.  You will gain the hands-on experience and real responsibility from day one.

Our well established training scheme (approved by the Institution of Civil Engineers) will be tailored to your needs and aspirations.  With all sorts of opportunities along the way, such as placements within partner organisations (both consultants and contractors), you will have plenty of exposure to both public and private sector projects.

The range of projects we work on at the Council is incredibly varied – in terms of budget, size, type and location.  Recent projects include the new £130m Kingskerswell bypass, the £42m landmark Barnstaple Western bypass (the biggest single civil engineering project prepared and awarded by the County Council for over 20 years), and the Exe Estuary Trail, making it possible to walk or cycle along both sides of the River Exe between Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish.

This is just a small taste of what goes on in the engineering department of Devon County Council.  Others say that “no two days are the same” – we mean it.
