I was interested in ICT and heard about the Devon County Apprenticeship Scheme. The scheme offers applicants a 2 year position to work with them while learning skills in ICT and getting paid. This was great as I was able to gain an understating of how ICT is used as well as gain qualifications and new experiences.

The Apprenticeship Scheme was a great opportunity for me as it helped me gain skills and enabled me to feel more confident in meeting new people. I attended workshops with the other apprentices to enable us to gain our qualifications. I found these sessions really good as they allowed me to meet up with the other Apprentice’s employed with Devon County Council and talk to each other about our placements.

There were a number of opportunities available to me during the scheme. As a group, we undertook a volunteering challenge where we created a sensory garden for a local Primary School. This was an opportunity for us to give something back to the community whilst gaining a broad range of skills such as leadership, planning and communication. We had to work together to decide how we would design the garden and how we would obtain the materials as we had to get them donated by companies. I really enjoyed this challenge and it was a great day.

The Apprenticeship Scheme also provided me with a great opportunity to attend the AER (Assembly of European Regions) Summer School in Valencia, Spain in August 2009. This was a chance to discuss global matters (such as water management) with other young people from Europe.

Overall I think the Apprenticeship Scheme is a great opportunity to earn while you learn whilst gaining valuable skills for life. I would strongly recommend the scheme.
