Case Study: Gemma Williams - Early Years and Childcare Service

Gemma Williams - Early Years and Childcare Service

"I completed my 2 year apprenticeship in the Early Years and Childcare Service where I completed a Business and Administration NVQ Level 2 and Level 3,and Customer Service NVQ Level 3. During my time as an apprentice I was lucky enough to spend 3 months with each of the teams in the Early Years and Childcare Service. This enabled me to observe people working and also get involved in the work, which ranged from doing research, helping to organise events and going out on Playdays.
I really enjoyed working in the Early Years and Childcare Service as it just felt like one big family and so I didn’t want to leave. In July 2009 I successfully gained a secondment to cover maternity leave as a Children’s Centre Support Officer, which I am really enjoying. At the end of December 2009 I also took on another role covering maternity leave as a Childcare Sufficiency Administrator. In these roles I have to provide PA support to the Children’s Centre Development Manager and the Childcare Development Manager as well as providing support to Children’s Centres and organising network meetings and conferences.
I have enjoyed the great variety of work that I have been able to be a part of and would like to continue to build up more qualifications, experience and knowledge. I hope to continue working for Devon County Council preferably in the Early Years and Childcare Service and work my way up the ladder. In 5 years time I would like to have the word ‘manager’ in my job title so I think I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me to get there!"
