Trees
A variety of tree species have been picked so that they provide all year round interest through their leaves, flowers and bark. A single tree species will be used in each of the streets. For example the leaves of the Red Ash to be planted in Hawthorn Road will turn into a deep red in the Autumn, whilst non-fruiting cherry trees will turn the hard landscape of the roundabout area into a sea of pink petals in early spring. In response to concerns over safety, species have been selected to allow greatest visibility through the trees. All the trees will have two metre clear stems and an open canopy. Maintenance requirements will be kept to a minimum, as all the trees will have well defined forms, reducing the need for pruning and producing low quantities of falling debris. To discourage vandalism, the tree guards, made out of sixteen, 42mm galvanised steel tubes, will protect each tree. These guards will be held together with three ‘Corten’ steel bands, which form a central theme for all the street furniture used in the scheme. Tree bollards will be installed next to a number of trees that are vulnerable to additional damage. |

Trees have been introduced into the scheme to green and soften the appearance of the street. The trees are located in linear arrangements to respect the grid road system. Trees also form part of the ‘Street Squares’ where they act as physical obstacles for cars, forcing them to reduce speed.
