Wonford HomeZone
Summary
With the help of Devon County Council, residents in Wonford, Exeter have been embracing the Home Zone concept. The project is now in its final stage, construction started on October 11th 2004 built with completion in early spring 2005. It will provide streets that are attractive and visually diverse, inspired by the ideas and desires of the community. The proposal for the project aims to change the layout and levels of the streets in order to reduce speeding; creative design features will also be used to achieve this. These include ‘Street Squares’, bespoke street furniture, including innovative ‘Pergola’ style street features and trees. All these will help to slow down traffic and at the same time introduce visual variety to the streets. Robust new lighting, carefully designed street furniture and specially chosen trees will maximise visibility to help create a safer environment. This will help to combat social problems currently experience in these streets from drug dealing, vandalism and local gangs. Creating a locally distinct scheme, which harmonises with the surrounding buildings and landscape, will be achieved through the use of local stone within the street surfaces and features and a colour scheme which respects these surroundings. All these changes will transform the streets in the Home Zone into places where residents are encouraged to go and where they will feel safe to walk and cycle. |
