Wonford HomeZone

Introduction

Wonford HomeZone

Wonford, is situated on the eastern side of Exeter, home to the city’s Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and a large housing estate built in the 1930’s. The Home Zone is located at the southern end of the housing estate, next to Burnthouse lane, a main arterial road running through the area. The Home Zone is made up of five residential streets: Holy Road; Lilac Road; Laurel Road; Hawthorn Road and Laburnum Road which are set out in a symmetrical grid road layout.

The architect for Exeter City Council, John Bennett, originally designed the housing estate in 1932, which was built over a period of eight years. High quality semi-detached housing, constructed in red brick, typifies this area. Both the gardens and houses within this estate are large when compared with modern housing.
