In 2001/2, over 381,000 tonnes of household waste were generated in Devon. About three-quarters of this was collected by the Waste Collection Authorities (District or Unitary Councils), whilst the remainder was taken by members of the public to the County Council’s Recycling Centres (previously known as Civic Amenity Recycling Centres – or CARCs for short). Household waste represents well under half the waste generated in Devon, the remainder being commercial and industrial waste, together with waste from construction and demolition sites.
