The Primrose Action Plan

Devon Primrose Survey

A Devon Primrose Survey has been undertaken to meet the objectives of the Devon Primrose Action Plan, which are to -

  • Raise appreciation of primroses and other commonplace form of wildlife as an important element of quality of life in Devon;
  • Use the primrose as a flagship species to highlight the importance of conserving such commonplace forms of wildlife;
  • Maintain the status of the wild primrose as a widespread and common species in Devon.

Pilot projects were carried out in East Devon in 2000 to assess how surveys might be used to generate meaningful information on the current status of wild primroses in Devon, whilst also generating public interest and involvement. Based on this experience, the Devon Primrose Survey was launched countywide in 2002 (having been delayed by the foot and mouth crisis the year earlier). The survey was implemented in two ways -

  1. A community-based survey, based on an attractive booklet designed to involve individuals and school groups in survey work in their local areas
  2. A slightly more rigorous survey based on random locations, undertaken by Womens' Institutes across Devon.

Also linked to the Devon Primrose Survey was a further piece of work, undertaken in Spring 2000, designed to assess the public attitude towards primroses and other aspects of Devon's natural environment. This provides some interesting insight into the public's awareness of wildlife issues and the importance they attach to its conservation.

(Devon County Council are no longer promoting the Primrose Survey, so please don't send any survey forms to us)
