Composting

Composting is one of the best things you can do to help the environment. About a third of your rubbish is food and garden waste and this could be composted.

Home composting is the best way to deal with garden waste and food waste:

  • you will have less rubbish to throw in your bin
  • you will help your plants grow
  • it is free
  • it can encourage beneficial wildlife into your garden
  • it helps to conserve peat bogs by reducing the need for peat-based compost

Community composting is the next most sustainable option for those who are unable to compost at home. Groups of volunteers manage sites where householders can bring garden waste for composting. The compost produced is then used in the local community. Devon leads the way in this with more than 25 sites. You can either get involved in a local scheme, or set one up in your area.

If you cannot compost at home or in your community, you can take your garden waste to your nearest recycling centre for centralised composting. The majority of this waste is taken away and composted on local farms. It can also be bought back as ‘Westcountry Compost’.
