RockETS stands for Rock Environmental Treatment Scheme, and distributes funding from the Government’s Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund to projects that reduce the effects of aggregate extraction in Devon (including Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, and Plymouth and Torbay Unitary Authorities).
Sand, gravel and crushed rock, such as limestone and granite, are classed as aggregates, and Devon County Council is keen to receive applications from Devon communities affected by aggregate extraction activities, both past and present.
Devon County Council has been given the go ahead to run RockETS for a further period until March 2009, and has an allocation of £120,000 to spend before that date.
RockETS can support a diverse range of schemes including improvements to public access, upgrading recreation areas, repairs to community buildings, and creation of wildlife habitats. Applicants can include community groups, charities, parish councils, district councils and quarry operators.
It is vital that all potential applicants can show that their project will help either to reduce or to compensate for the effects of aggregate extraction. Each case is unique, so potential applicants are advised to contact the RockETS Administrator at Devon County Council to discuss whether their project would be eligible.
