
The 'historic environment' encompasses all those material remains that our ancestors have created in the landscapes of town and countryside. It covers the whole spectrum of human activity from the largest - towns, cathedrals or motorways, to the very smallest - signposts, standing stones or flint tools. Because of unceasing human activity through the ages, virtually all the rural landscape of England, as well as its towns and villages, forms part of the historic environment.

Historic Landscape Characterisation is a method for understanding and mapping the landscape that we see today with reference to its historical development. Devon County Council and English Heritage have undertaken Historic Landscape Characterisation mapping for the county, and the results of this are now available online.
