Foot and Mouth

The outbreak in Surrey is very upsetting for many in Devon who suffered so badly in the 2001 outbreak. The thoughts of many people in Devon will be with the farming community in Surrey because we know only too well what they must be experiencing. Right now vigilance and excellent biosecurity are our best defence and that's why animal health officers from Devon County Council are working closely with the farming community and DEFRA to ensure our defences are as strong as possible.

2001 Foot and Mouth Inquiry Report

Access to the countryside

Devon's glorious countryside is the lifeblood for much our economy and our message is that Devon is very much open for business. Whether people live in the county or are visiting, it's important to understand that everyone can carry on enjoying Devon as normal. All that the County Council asks, on behalf of the farming community, is that everyone respects the countryside, keeps to the marked footpaths, closes gates behind them and keeps pets under control at all times.

There is no intention to close down footpaths and bridleways in Devon as happened in 2001. It did not help control the spread of the disease, but it had a huge effect on the economy. The closure programme, based on Government regulation at the time, created the impression that the county was closed and that coupled with TV images of burning pyres had a devastating impact on our tourism industry, including many farming families who rely on tourism to supplement their farm incomes.
