Couples who choose to marry abroad may need to obtain a Certificate of No Impediment by giving notice, by appointment, at a Registration Office. This document may be requested by representatives in other countries and could ease the process of organising a ceremony in another country. However marriage laws vary in different countries and it would be sensible to contact a Registration Office as soon as the decision to marry abroad has been made.

Notice periods for Certificates of No Impediment vary depending on whether both parties are British citizens or not.  It is important that contact is made with a Registration Office for advice, particularly before any travel arrangements to the country where the marriage is to take place are made.  A statutory fee is payable by each party when giving notice.  Payment may be made preferably by credit or debit card or cash.  If payment is made by cheque this should be made payable to Devon County Council.
