Marriages
The legal preliminaries to civil marriage must be conducted in person at a Registration Office. Couples must each give Notice of Marriage declaring that they are free to marry.
Devon (excluding Plymouth and Torbay) is now one Registration District. This means that couples living in, or wishing to give notice of marriage in, the Devon County Council area may make an appointment to do so at any of Devon's eight Registration Offices, rather than being restricted to the Office for the area in which they live or have set up residency.
In some cases if one or both parties to the intended marriage are not British citizens it may be necessary for notice of marriage to be given at a Designated Register Office. The Devon Register Office in Newton Abbot is a Designated Register Office.
The Registration Service is also responsible for registering marriages at some Churches and Chapels and approving properties to be used for civil ceremonies. Couples choosing a civil marriage ceremony may be married within a Registration (Register) Office, its Additional Ceremony Room, where available, or at any approved venue in England and Wales. In the Devon County Council area there are over 150 approved venues.
