Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring on my first visit?

1. Proof of ID

If you wish to look at original documents, we require proof of identity. The following forms of proof will be accepted:

  • CARN ticket
  • Driving licence
  • Official letter with address
  • Family allowance book
  • Bank statements
  • Benefits book or equivalent
  • Passport
  • Pension book or card
  • Official ID card
  • Medical card
  • Vehicle registration document
  • Disabled person’s registration
  • Post Office savings book

2. Tickets and season tickets

There is no charge for persons wishing to use Record Office material, whether on microform or as original documents.

We no longer issue season or group tickets, but encourage all searchers to obtain a CARN (Country-wide Archive Research Network) ticket from us.  A CARN ticket is valid for 4 years and is accepted at many record offices.  Certain specified forms of proof of identity are required in order to obtain a CARN ticket from our record office.  A valid driver’s licence is an acceptable form of proof of identity.

3. Other items

If you wish to make notes while looking at original documents, you should bring a pencil. We also provide pencils for sale.

Some documents may be too large or in too poor condition to photocopy. In such cases, you may wish to photograph the document(s) yourself, though you will in most cases have to complete a copyright declaration for any photographs taken.
