What should I bring on my first visit?

Proof of ID

If you wish to look at original documents, we require proof of identity. The following forms of proof will be accepted:

  • CARN ticket
  • Driving licence
  • Official letter with address
  • Family allowance book
  • Bank statement
  • Benefits book or equivalent
  • Passport
  • Pension book or card
  • Official ID card
  • Medical card
  • Vehicle registration document
  • Disabled person’s registration
  • Post office savings book

Other items

If you wish to make notes while looking at original documents, you should bring a pencil. We can provide pencils if needed.

Some documents may be too large or in too poor condition to photocopy. In such cases, you may wish to photograph the document(s) yourself, though you will have to complete a copyright declaration for any photographs taken.
