Market Town Focus

Cullompton

Cullompton is a town lying on the River Culm and close to the M5 motorway.

The town is thought to have been named for Saint Columba. Notable buildings in Cullompton include the fifteenth century parish church and sixteenth century Cullompton Manor House (now the Manor House Hotel), built as the town grew around the woolen industry.

  • There has been significant population growth since 1991 in the area with Cullompton parish growing by about a third and more than twice the county average. The population is around 8,000.
  • There is a slightly higher proportion of the younger working age (25-44) and 75 and the over in Cullompton parish.
  • The number of households with an annual income of less than £20,000 is lower than the district and county averages.
  • Over 40% of businesses in the market town area are involved in either manufacturing or wholesale & retail or real estate.
  • Children living in areas other than Cullompton parish achieve significantly higher results at Key Stage 2 than those that live in the parish.
