Napoli Updates - February 07

MSC Napoli - Situation update 12/02/07

NAPOLI UPDATE – Monday 12 February

From the MSC Napoli Response Centre

Seaward

There has been very little change in the vessel over the weekend as the weather did not have the predicted impact. The Met Office inshore waters forecast, valid until midday tomorrow (Tuesday), is for westerly winds of up to gale force 9 becoming south westerly 5 or 6. The sea state is expected to be rough or very rough.

The vessel is stable at this time and its list remains 10 degrees to starboard. The likelihood of the vessel splitting in two has decreased.

Work is continuing to remove the remaining 100 tonnes of oil pollutants in the engine room. This is expected to be removed early this week, weather conditions permitting.

An aerial survey has been carried out and no new pollution has been reported.

The crane barge, Big Foot, and the shuttle barges remain in sheltered harbour and are not expected to return before Wednesday at the earliest as they await more settled weather conditions.

Onshore

As the sea conditions have worsened, more debris has washed ashore in different locations.

East Devon District Council has reported shampoo bottles washing up at Exmouth, fibreglass at Seaton, plastic and BMW parts at Seaton. Sidmouth has remained clear.

Contractors are clearing the debris as it comes ashore.

The MCA reported that a sheen of diesel seen off Branscombe beach should evaporate
