Improving Devon’s Environment

We want Devon to continue to be a great place to live, visit and do business and to ensure that our growing population of residents and visitors does not threaten the environment that makes Devon special.

How Devon is now

  • 87% of people living in Devon are satisfied with the county as a place to live – this is the highest satisfaction rating of any local authority area
  • For most residents, the high quality of the natural environment is what makes Devon a great place to live
  • There was a 3% reduction in the amount of waste produced by Devon households in 2004/5 but more needs to be done to reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled
  • Devon has 12,800 km of roads, the largest single network in the country, and journey times can be unpredictable
  • Population growth, increased car ownership and tourism have resulted in increased journey times and air pollution
  • Reducing traffic congestion and improving public transport is one of the public’s top priorities
  • Over 90% of residents think the County Council should do more to make Devon’s towns cleaner and more attractive

Our objectives

We will:

  • minimise waste, increase recycling and composting and reduce the landfilling of waste
  • tackle traffic congestion and air pollution and improve public transport;
  • conserve the natural environment and improve the environment in which we live and work

Making Devon Greener

  • Seek to meet the needs of Devon’s growing population in ways that protect and enhance the environment and support the use of brownfield sites for new development wherever possible
  • Encourage developers to design and build new buildings in accordance with national environmental best practice
  • Continue to raise awareness of the need to reduce waste
  • Make it easier for people to use alternative forms of transport to the car
  • Help to make Devon’s town centres greener and cleaner
