Promoting independence and choice for Devon’s adults
Our aim is to build strong communities in which everyone can play an active role and take control of their lives. We want to promote independence and choice and provide support and protection to the most vulnerable.
How Devon is now
- Devon has a high and increasing population of older people with 10.4% of the population aged 75 or over compared with 7.6% nationally
- The number of people aged 80 or over is forecast to rise by 8% over the next 5 years – this is the group with the highest health and social care needs.
- Approximately one in five adults in Devon has a limiting long term illness
- Many people with health and social care needs would prefer to be supported in their own home rather than in residential care
- About 73,000 people in Devon regularly provide unpaid care to relatives or friends - 20% of these provide more than 50 hours of care each week and over 2,000 carers are under the age of 20
- Improving support for older and disabled people and their carers is one of the public’s top priorities
Our objectives
We want to enable people to:
- stay healthy and safe in their own home
- enjoy a good quality of life through access to leisure and social activities
- make a positive contribution to their community through employment, volunteering and involvement in decision making
- maintain personal dignity and take control of their lives by exercising choice
- realise a sufficient income to meet their needs and participate in community life
- have equality of access to services and protection from discrimination and harm
Making Devon Greener
- Help people on low incomes to make more efficient use of energy and water in their own homes
- Ensure best environmental practice in the design of housing and care facilities
- Help the providers of health and social care services to adopt environmentally friendly practices
