Volunteers needed who hear the call of the wild

From David Hutchings, Exeter 382594, February 08, 2007

VOLUNTEERS are needed across Devon to help run highly successful wildlife activities this summer.

Wild Nights Out are run by Devon Discovery, which is Devon County Council's outdoor learning service.

They are mainly taken up by schools and youth and community groups but adult groups have also taken part.

Volunteers are vital to the successful running of each event and help to set up the camp, cook over the fire and support the leader in some of the activities.

Devon Discovery is currently recruiting for the coming season which runs from May to September.

Volunteers do not need any experience as full training is provided but they are asked to commit to at least three of the 24-hour events during the season.

Wild Nights Out are overnight, wildlife camps which offer a unique variety of activities, blending environmental and wildlife encounters with an exciting outdoor experience.

Each Wild Night Out lasts about 24 hours when people get immersed in Devon's spectacular countryside taking part in a variety of activities including traditional naturalist activities like bat and owl detection and mini-beast hunts, sensory awareness, games and stories.

There is time for quieter moments of observation and reflection, which encourage true appreciation of the whole experience and the magical qualities of the surroundings.

Camps are set in spectacular, wild locations throughout Devon.

There will be a volunteer enrolment and induction day on Saturday, March 24.

For more information and to book a place on the induction day, contact:
