Tiverton pupils pledge to cut carbon footprint

From David Hutchings, Exeter 382594, May 17, 2007

PUPILS at a Tiverton primary school have pledged to cut their carbon footprint and help Devon Go Green.

The pupils at Wilcombe Primary School are taking part in Devon County Council's Do it for Devon campaign which is aimed at reducing domestic carbon emissions.

They account for a third of Devon's total carbon emissions.

The Wilcombe pupils held an assembly on the subject and then brainstormed what they could do to contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

Every pupil made a pledge including promising to recycle more and turning off lights when they leave rooms.

Wilcombe headteacher Gary Chown said: "The children have been very enthusiastic in their support for this initiative.

"They want to grow up in a world which has already taken steps to limit global warming and not one in which they inherit the problems that we have caused.

"This is educating them to be environmentally responsible but it will have other benefits.

"Hopefully we will also save money on energy and every penny we don't have to spend on heating and lighting the school, we can devote to resources for the children's education."
