If you are visiting the Devon Record Office this month look out for the Vivien Leigh Exhibition. The exhibition, courtesy of Topsham Museum, features the replica nightgown worn by the actress in Gone with the Wind and original diaries held at the Devon Record Office. The diaries were kept by Dorothy Holman, Vivien Leigh's sister-in-law, and detail the actress's life before she became a huge star of stage and screen.
"This is a lovely tribute and well worth a visit" said Councillor Sheila Hobden, Executive Member for Culture.
The small exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm at Devon Record Office, Great Moor House, Bittern Road, Sowton, Exeter. EX2 7NL
Notes to editors
Devon Record Office collects records relating to the county of Devon and its families, except where the primary connection is with Plymouth. These records include those of local government, the Church of England and other denominations, of individuals, families, businesses, societies, schools - any of the groups who have contributed to the past life of the county or who do so today.
Topsham Museum is a small local museum run entirely by around 150 volunteers. The Museum was founded by Dorothy Holman in the house she owned. Her youngest brother Leigh, married Vivienne Hartley in December 1932. The Museum was recently short listed for the Art Fund Prize in recognition of its new gallery housing a major project, set up to save, conserve and display a unique collection of boats, specific to the Exe Estuary, which were at risk following the closure of the museum where they were formerly housed.
